Why It's IMportant to have your horses teeth examined regulary

Picture
1) Check for a balanced axial flow. Which is important for proper food breakdown for healthy digestion.

2) Check for and remove sharp points and hooks to avoid lacerations of the tongue or cheek.

3) Apply bit seats for performance horses to allow the horse to be comfortable on the bit. Most horses will respond quicker and provide the rider with better control.

4) Check and remove any deciduous teeth

5) Smooth the occlusal surfaces of the cheek teeth nest so the horse can use all of his teeth for eating

What you should know

All horses can benefit from the services of an equine dentist, in addition to your regular veterinarian check ups. There may be points on the teeth which are causing either constant discomfort or digging ulceration's in the cheeks. There could be waves or steps in the mouth causing food to build up and stick in the teeth. All of these issues are easy to correct and maintain with regular dental exams and work.

A horse that is in pain will not perform to his full potential. Tail wringing, head tossing, fussing with the bit, running backwards, and temper fits can all be dental related issues. Other common issues that could be dental related are Weight loss, Grain falling from the mouth, balls of chewed grass or hay found where your horse normally eats, and loss of appetite.

All horses should have there teeth examined yearly. Performance horses should be examined every 6 months.
